All Modern Icons are unique pieces of artwork

Christmas

They represent a modern western form of an ancient stream of sacral art and act as messengers for Christian unity. They are suitable for rooms of adoration in public and private settings. Their messages are clearly related to testimonies of Christian faith.

The Formation of Modern Icons

A Modern Icon emerges from an inner image, received through prayer and contemplation, related to a spiritual content (i.e. Birth of Christ, Blessing Mary, Angels over the Water etc.). In order to build a Modern Icon it is necessary to select the proper piece of wood, because the grain of the wood is visible in spite of a light white primer. Afterwards a metal layer can be glued over it.

Contrary to extensive gold surfaces used by the Old Masters, metal (gold, silver, copper) is only partially applied, for instance for the main emphasis of interpretation, the focal point of the piece.

The colour combinations reflect the annual cycle of nature and the liturgical colours (e.g. violet in Lent).

Then the actual process of painting can begin. Water colours are applied layer by layer – with an average of 30 to 50 layers.

Observation

The viewer can truly perceive the icon through deep observation. In this way the Modern Icon can convey spiritual experiences. The longer one observes, the more perceptible they will become. In contemplative reflection a connection to the inner image, which stood at the beginning of the painting of the icon, can be established.

Bowed Psaltery

My artistic profession involves musical work. The sounds accompanying the perception of this homepage are produced by an instrument which is quite unknown today: the bowed psaltery.

The psaltery is both a very old and modern instrument. It had been identified in Phoenician times, is mentioned in the psalms and is part of the instrumental family of zithers. Today it is constructed by several instrument makers in a classical wing shape or as a hollow-bodied instrument. Here we see a tenor psaltery made by instrument maker Knut Rennert.

As the psaltery can be used for meditative and sacral music alike, I like to play it in churches, in services, in nature settings or at artistic events. Hereby personal improvisations and compositions are created and can further develop.
